There’s plenty for the horticultural enthusiast to take part in this bank holiday week-end. Here’s a round up of some of the highlights…

hatchlandsHatchlands Park, nr Guildford

There’s lots going on at this National Trust property during the first week of May, including pony rides, archery, Shakespeare displays and for those more interested in plants and particularly trees, there’s an ‘Ancient and Notable Tree’ walk on 5th May from 11am – 1pm, led by the gardening team. the vyneThe Big Tree Climb at The Vyne, Nr Basingstoke

(N.B. This event is sold out for the first week of May, BUT, you can still book it for later in the month).

If you’ve ever wanted to see a tree from a new perspective (i.e. high up on the end of a rope), then head to the Vyne, near Basingstoke, for The Big Tree Climb. This is a great activity for anyone who harbours an idea of being a tree surgeon, or who’s just simply adventurous!

Suitable for ages 6 – 100. From £20 per person. Must be booked in advance. Please call 0800 0556760 or book online via the Big Tree Climing Company. Next session 21st May from 10 a.m.

a craft fair wisleyWisley Spring Craft Fair – until Mon 2nd May

Although this annual fair opened on Thursday 28th April, there’s still plenty to enjoy for those on holiday over the bank holiday weekend. With over 170 makers at the event there’s something for everyone, including pottery, glass and jewellery – not to mention the beautiful Wisley gardens to enjoy in the spring sunshine. gatton-park-treesGatton Park, nr Reigate – Sunday 1st May 1-5pm

Gatton parks covers over 600 acres and was designed by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown. It is jointly managed by the National Trust and the Gatton Trust, and the 260 acres that include the gardens are open monthly throughout the summer and early Autumn. There are family trails to follow as well as a Japanese garden, rock and water garden, parterre, orchard and walled garden.

£4.00 per adult – children free.

Ham HouseHam House, Nr Richmond – Sunday 1st May

Ham house are celebrating May Day in style, with a host of events including a dew gathering ceremony. There will also be art activities, a family trail and storytelling in the afternoon. For details see HERE. Normal admission applies. £10.40 adult. £5.20 child. £26.00 family.

If you really want to enter the spirit of spring and learn a little floristry along the way then take part in the flower crown workshop between 11am – 1pm. £26.00 – booking essential.
